LVMPD Foundation’s Back to School Initiative Looks to Provide 12,000 Backpacks and Other School Supplies to Local Students

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) Foundation is proud to sponsor its annual Back to School Initiative once again this year. The Foundation is now accepting online donations and school supply purchases via Amazon for distribution by LVMPD area command and substation officers in Southern Nevada.

“This year’s Back to School Initiative is more important than ever with so many families still affected by COVID-19 and its significant financial impact,” said Tom Kovach, executive director of the LVMPD Foundation. “Vulnerable families are increasingly unable to provide school supplies on their own and far too many students do not have the supplies they need to be successful in school. This program helps to alleviate financial hardships as students return to the classroom,’ says Kovach.

“School supplies are the first tools that children learn to use and having the essential supplies from the start of the school year empowers them to better succeed in school,” says Flor Bernal, director of finance and operations for the Foundation and coordinator of the backpack drive.

Public and private donations are essential to equipping 12,000 local students with backpacks and school supplies for their first day of school. One of the major sponsors is Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. And as a service to the community, Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield has offered to organize and coordinate a COVID-19 vaccination site at backpack distribution events that each area command holds.

“Anthem has been serving communities across Nevada for more than 50 years by investing in and supporting innovative solutions that remove barriers to improve lives,” said Lisa Bogard, president, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Nevada, Medicaid. “The annual LVMPD Foundation Back to School Initiative is one of those efforts that can empower children with the resources they need to focus on and excel in their learning, so we are grateful for the opportunity to once again collaborate with LVMPD and continue to make this initiative a success.”
