Foundation’s Black Giving Circle Sponsors Book Fairs

The Black Giving Circle, a new Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) Foundation initiative, recently sponsored Scholastic Book Fairs for students attending Democracy Prep at the Agassi Campus and West Preparatory Academy located within the LVMPD Bolden Area Command.

Black Giving Circle member Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield underwrote two books per student at each Book Fair for approximately 900 students combined.  LVMPD officers read books to the children and answered their questions,, Metro Volunteer Program volunteers and Black Giving Circle donors volunteered as cashiers, and baggers, and interacted with the students to discuss their favorite books.

“Improving literacy proficiency is a priority for the Black Giving Circle given the importance of reading to student development,” said Tom Kovach, Executive Director, LVMPD Foundation.  “Many students do not have the resources to build a home library, and with the donation of two books per student, we are helping to bridge that skill gap to increase academic success down the road.”

Black Giving Circle is a membership program designed to empower Black ownership of public safety.  The goals of the Black Giving Circle are to ensure the continued growth of several youth programs, including Bolden Little League and Hockey United, providing mentorship and trust between officers and children; Cooking with a Cop, Reading with a Cop, and Conversations with a Cop programming in conjunction with NAACP Las Vegas Branch to improve communication between young people and law enforcement; Empowering Our Girls Workshop, demonstrating power and worth of young females; and Hip Hop & Entrepreneurship Program, focusing on lifting youth of color through the creative process of hip hop, rap and education about the music industry.

Community and local business leaders are invited to become members of the Black Giving Circle to support these programs.  More information on Black Giving Circle | Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Foundation (lvmpdfoundation.org)
