Firestone Care Care Center Contribution

The FOM received a donation of $500 on May 18th from the Firestone Care Care Center in Centennial Hills on North Durango. It was given in honor of the official grand opening ceremony for the business. Thank you to Firestone and its staff for thinking of the Friends of LVMPD Foundation, and the men and women who work to protect our community.

LVMPD to Add Three More Names of Fallen Officers to Memorial During May 17 Ceremony

Three more names will be added to the memorial wall for fallen officers on Thursday,
May 17 during the Southern Nevada Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony.
The multi-agency event pays tribute to local law enforcement officers who died in the
line of duty from 1905 to present.

* The ceremony will be held at the Police Memorial Park, 3250 Metro Academy
Way, * 6 p.m.
* Thursday, May 17th, 2012

The additions to the wall include U.S. Drug Enforcement Special Agent Don Cleo
Ware, who died Oct. 12, 2004, Nevada Department of Corrections Officer Tracy Hardin
who died Jan. 20, 2012 and Clark County Sheriff’s Deputy Jack London, who died May
17, 1943.
Altogether, 31 officers will be remembered at the ceremony from the following agencies:
DEA, FBI, Henderson PD, NLVPD, Nevada Department of Corrections, Union Pacific
Railroad, LVMPD, United States Marshal Service, and the Nye County Sheriff’s Office.
Speakers at the event will include LVMPD Sheriff Douglas Gillespie, Lt. Tim Filson of
the Nevada Department of Corrections and Assistant Special Agent in Charge Paul A.
Rozario of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

At the end of the ceremony, City of Las Vegas Mayor Pro Tem Stavros Anthony will
rededicate the Law Enforcement Memorial Rock, which was recently moved to its final
home at the Police Memorial Park.

Major Cities Chiefs Las Vegas Brings Together National Law Enforcement Leaders

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department played host to dozens of police chiefs from many of the nation’s largest cities in February. The leaders united for discussion on various elements including trends in crime fighting, homeland security concerns, and challenges for police agencies facing tight budgets.

Highlights included presentations from national law enforcement experts and specialists from federal agencies focused on law enforcement across America.

The conference was funded by generous donations from local and national companies, as well as the Major Cities Chiefs national organization. The Friends of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Foundation wants to thank all the sponsors and donors of this important meeting of crime fighting leaders.

Program Helps Stop Gang-related Violence

The empty playgrounds on beautiful spring days symbolized the currents of fear rippling through west Las Vegas neighborhoods in 2006. Parents were afraid to let their children outside.

Metro Police described the area as decaying and riddled with an “incredible” amount of gang violence. In a short span, stray bullets killed three innocent bystanders — a 12-year-old, a mother and another woman — during all-too-common drive-by shootings.

The Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCC) is a professional organization of police executives representing the largest cities in the United States and Canada. The Association has selected Las Vegas to host its Mid-Winter Meeting.

The MCC provides a unique forum for urban police, sheriffs and other law enforcement chief executives to discuss common problems, to share information and problem-solving strategies. MCC articulates the public safety needs of large cities in the formulation of criminal justice policy.
